Overwhelming closets are pretty draining, and believe it or not, most of us choose to live in a state of frustration and feeling overwhelmed when it comes to our closets. I believe great style begins in your closet, and a draining closet is a reflection of your day and your week. In fact, a draining closet is a reflection of YOU.

The truth is that most of our closets are messes because we don’t realize how important it is to maintain them. A closet should tell a story and give us a glimpse of who we are. Think of it this way…a chaotic closet will only cause more chaos in your life. An uncluttered closet will likely bring joy, peace, and calmness into your home.

Create A Functional Layout That Works For You

Creating a functional layout and putting your items in the right place is a crucial part to organizing your closet (but really, your life). What is a functional closet? A functional closet includes a layout that works best for you, your lifestyle, and space. If your clothes, shoes, and accessories are impossible to find, it is NOT functional.

When you open your closet you should want to see the clothes you enjoy and wear often. Adding sections is also very important; just keep in mind that each section should be within a specific category. If you prefer to see everything at a glance, then hanging up your wardrobe is your best bet. If you don’t have the space to do so, include a combination of sections, IE: a hanging area, space for drawers, shelves, and a section for storage.

An Adaptable Closet Is Convenient To Use

Once you’ve created your new layout, the first few weeks should be used to test your layout to make sure it’s adaptable and convenient. Whether you’re walking into your closet or reaching for your items…you want to make sure you ask yourself the following questions: Am I spending less time getting ready? Does my layout allow for greater accessibility? If the answer to both of these are no, then you might want to revamp your layout.

Regardless of the size of your closet, you can create a space that feels inviting and looks aesthetically pleasing. While your wardrobe may be the most important part to creating your layout, you should also think about final touches to add to the space, like a chair, full-length mirror, or statement rug. Just remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to make your closet functional. You might just need help.
